The Purple Store
O:) Who started a new business? Oh yeah, that's right, me and A. BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! And Lauren and Russell, it's a month for new businesses :>

I hereby present The Purple Store, LLC at www.purplestore.com

You feel a sudden urge to buy something purple ;)

p.s. Goth is under "Fashion"

1. We needs purple hair photos of you, if you've ever dyed your hair purple and want to share. Send it to me, and include what dyes you used and any other helpful tidbits that kept it purple longer or helped clean up the mess. I also so need help with what purple makeup is good and what sucks. Have any opinions?

2. A told me this idea a few months ago. I was like, "Cool". And then, after 2 weeks, I came back and said, "No, that's brilliant, let's do it". So we did it. The current site is market research to see if this is a viable business. We currently receive a small commission as an associate of Amazon.com which allows us to access most of their inventory and third party seller inventory so we can figure out what purple people neeeeeeeed.

3. This is so beta rev 1. Does it break? Quick, tell me. I wrote the whole site by hand in Perl and A handled the actual editorial content and layout. Also, the hosting company we're using has had some really crappy problems with our database over the last few days that has me worried. Suddenly, the left nav and content will stop displaying. I'll have a user-friendly error up in a few days in the event that that does happen. I'm hoping the problems fixed, but honestly I don't think it is yet.

4. Once our friends and family have had a chance to poke around and provide feedback and suggestions, we're going to start doing real promotion. This is a fully functioning site (except for bugs I haven't found yet) so if you buy something, you are really buying it.

5. If we have a decent success rate with the site, one of our promotional methods is going to be to collect unique purple objects from local artists and do trade shows and conventions. We missed Norwescon for this year :( but have our eyes open for other opportunities. Victoria, Blue Jay, I'm already thinking of both of you. I also have several local Fremont artists in mind - designer light switch plates, jewelry, the funky recycled coasters and bathroom tiles of one local glass recycling company, leather & fetish wear... check out the Contact Us page if you have something purple you make that you're interested in pimping with The Purple Store. I also have an upholsterer in mind if we get up the bank to do a crushed velvet violet wingback chair like my burgundy one and/or a metallic purple vinyl chair.

6. I'm having way too much fun with this. GRiN. Now, what would rock is, if it's successful enough that I never have to get a REAL job again ;)

We're doing something at The Purple Store called The Purple Council. We're asking purple lovers to do a product review and recommendation from time to time in exchange for a purple bribe of some kind at the end of each successful business year. It could be a purple highlighter or a massive purple gift set of cool random stuff, just depending on how well we do and what kind of contacts we make in the next year.

Let me know if you LOVE purple and are interested and aren't already on this list: mcobweb, ocicat, Black Maru, misspurplepearl, Sadee.

You should add artvixn
Kburgunder on February 1st, 2005 11:14 am (UTC)
I'll make sure she sees this on SeaGoth when we do the more public announcement, or I'll let her know if I see her at the clubs in the meantime :) Thanks!
Diana: Starartvixn on February 28th, 2005 12:36 am (UTC)
Sorry, I don't Seagoth these days and my club appearances have been rare. But now that I know, I'd love to give input.

Re: Wheeeeeee!!!!!
Hey beautiful Miss D - email me your snail mail address if you're interested in joining the Purple Council (short description: if interested, this is a position reserved for the hardcore purple people. You do a review or 2 per year and recommend some products and if we get samples, they go to our purple council for review, and if we have a successful fiscal year, we send out something fun or interesting in purple to everyone who has contributed ... we're still putting together the invitations and the exact specifics of what we ask for and what we provide in return).

I also just finally set up an LJ account just for the store called "thepurplestore", which will track some of our big, fun milestones.

Yay! That site is awesome. And I love PURPLE. You should someday add a warring green component to it someday. (Yes, I am that much of a geek. But you already knew that.)
Kburgunder on February 1st, 2005 11:28 am (UTC)
I knew about "I Shall Wear Purple" by Jenny Joseph (we'll have an ode to the poem up in a few weeks) but this warring green thing ... I'm totally ignorant. Do I lose geek points?

p.s. Meg Cabot rocks. She's been my saviour when I've needed a break from purple ;)
Kriskfrye on February 1st, 2005 01:57 pm (UTC)
You totally lose geek points. I meant the silly B5 thing with the Drasi (sp?) Green & Purple factions. Green! Purple! It was so absurd that it's always stuck in my brain.

So glad you like Meg Cabot! She's such a guilty pleasure. And I'm so in love with Rob from the 1-800 books.. how sad is that?
Kburgunder on February 1st, 2005 03:43 pm (UTC)
Oh, there is shame upon my head!

We fight them because they are green.

They are green. We are purple.

I love that episode because it just about sums up my perception of most warring initiatives.

While not a purple person myself I LOVE the store! I'm digging the purple wheelchair...they's jsut too cool.
Kburgunder on February 1st, 2005 03:33 pm (UTC)
I was so psyched when I found it. There is another one that's even more of a screaming purple, but I haven't found a reputable seller of it yet.
Stray Catocicat on February 1st, 2005 12:34 pm (UTC)
Very nice! I'm sure I'll be coming up with all sorts of purple things to add to your store.

Like, if you're working with Amazon.com anyway, you really need to sell copies of Harold and the Purple Crayon"
Kburgunder on February 1st, 2005 03:39 pm (UTC)

AND "I Shall Wear Purple". Have you heard of the poem?

A has this crazy fabulous idea of having a Purple Bookshelf at some point ... his original idea was just books with purple spines but being all about literacy I immediately saw the possible opportunity of doing something like a real purple 2-3 shelf bookshelf plus purple-themed and purple-spined books where everyone donates $10 to get in on the drawing... the money goes to a literacy program and the winner gets the bookshelf with all of the books.

Which got us on to having a product or two where all of our proceeds go to a literacy program ...

... which is still very much an idea in progress and it'd be a few months before we were in a position to reach the number of people we'd need to make it worthwhile, or have the $$ to do it. I will say that the new Harry Potter cover is purple and I can think of few better products to support literacy ...

If the business has any real success, the cool thing is, I can actually be Ethical and Idealistic every once in awhile, as long as I'm not jacking the bottom line. Pretty cool.

I so thought of you early on while we were working on this project :) Thanks for the bug report, Ms. A! I'm now officially your personal slave for finding purple things you can't find ;)

First set of bugs.
Very nice!

Re: First set of bugs.
GRiN, I was going to call you to see if you had time to give it a once over - THANK YOU!
VAXhackervaxhacker on February 1st, 2005 01:34 pm (UTC)
Very cool. Good luck with the business! :)

Thank you!
RocketGirl: The Thunder Roadeonen on February 1st, 2005 01:43 pm (UTC)
Well...purple at least contains my favorite color... :)
Kburgunder on February 1st, 2005 03:41 pm (UTC)
OK, I give up... lupe? rupe? pure? purple the word or purple the color and its children hues? Don't leave me hanging, woman!
Laurendj_stitch on February 1st, 2005 04:33 pm (UTC)
Oh man, I so wish I had pics of the purple spiked hair that almost got me kicked out of private school in 7th grade.

You rule, and this rules, and omigod wouldn't it be rad if our businesses totally took off and we made tons of money and never had bosses again?!?
Ichiban Chandomichan on February 1st, 2005 05:33 pm (UTC)
This is AWESOME. What a perfect, perfect thing! I'm very happy for you.

Now, when are we getting together? I have some updates for you...

Purple chocolate

Hey... no purple covered chocolate there?
or licorice cat

Also I was trying to find a purple robe... the kind that kings wear, but
didn't find one...

Granted these are a bit harder to get purple items.

On the other note, I just banged my hand on the door and it has nice purple colour in it. Free Purple! :)

Nice shop, hope it turns out to be worth the work load. :)

Very clever idea :) nice site, good luck with it.

now off to start my own business.. the Green store! (b5 thing)
Paxpaxamillion on February 4th, 2005 10:19 pm (UTC)
OK, so I know this is so odd coming from me... it's actaully Ilsa's fault, and her mothers.

Go up to www.redhatsociety.com

You can register as a vender to the Red Hat Society. If your not familiar, read up on them.

They wear red hats and purple coats and accessories. There are hundreds of thousands of members in the US.

With a name like The Purple Store, it should generate alot of hits if you can get on their website, or in one of their newsletters or journals.

And as noted above, what about other colors? Maybe grab the urls before someone else does. Although, it looks like redstore.com is already in use by a British electronics reseller.
Paxpaxamillion on February 4th, 2005 10:30 pm (UTC)
and Blackstore.com looks really interesting... anyone want to translate for me?
Kburgunder on February 8th, 2005 01:32 am (UTC)
d00d. The second our database is stable for 3 consecutive days, I'll be there. THANK YOU!
Staxstaxxy on February 5th, 2005 09:04 pm (UTC)
If you can get violet flavored things on the site, I think that would rule.

I can work on making purple stuff for you, with purpley sents... Like Violet, lilac, grape, Iris (if I can POSSIBLY find or make it), plum, blackberry

I know I can make really LOVELY purple bathsalts that turn the water (but not you) a lovely shade. :)

Let me know if you are interested in having some exclusive scents or flavors created for your site. I am doing some exclusive scents and flavors for a gothy online store.
Kburgunder on February 8th, 2005 01:30 am (UTC)
Awesome! I'll definitely drop you a line once we hit Phase II and are doing more of the shipping & fulfillment ourselves :> (could be a few months)
Staxstaxxy on February 8th, 2005 01:33 am (UTC)
okay lady. If you drop me a line early, we can work out what sort of stuff you would like to have, and I can put together samples for you to try out yourself before it goes anywhere near the site. ;)
Emyeyow on February 5th, 2005 11:47 pm (UTC)
I am the Emy that chiaspod referred to in his site. This is definitely a cool site, thank you for doing it, I hope it goes well, and I'm off now to pimp it in my LJ.

And off the top of my head, Barney is also a purple character (do we really want to admit that?!?!?), as is Tinky Winky teletubby. Heh.
Kburgunder on February 8th, 2005 01:28 am (UTC)
So far, A and I have decided that Barney is magenta under the theory that magenta isn't purple. I'm tempted to put a little disclaimer on the purple characters page that says, "Dear Parents, We are happy to inform you that this is a Barney-free page. Barney is magenta. You are safe."

Although, I think one could argue that Barney is an awfully not-magenta shade of magenta. Hrumph!

I know where the products are for Tinky Winky, but I think my capitalist whoredom is having an ethical dilemna.

You know who else forgot? (Of oh so many) DINO! From the Flinstones. And both of the villains from Strawberry Shortcake.

I'm so glad you like the site, I'd love to hear any comments you have, please feel free to make me your purple slave. ;>
