Sleep
Do we have the ability to gas a whole city to sleep? I think we have the ability to gas most of a city to death, so it seems like we should have this ability, but maybe I'm being naive (likely, in fact).

What is the likelihood that enough people aren't affected by the gas or have gas masks, and are able to overwhelm the foot soldiers?

If people were blowing themselves up and taking out friends, relatives, children in your town for more than a year, how would you feel about being gassed to sleep and not witnessing strangers entering and searching your house while you were unconscioius if the end result was less suicide bombings?

Don't forget about people coming in & out of the city, those in well-ventilated areas(and in some cases, this could be their house) and the sheer volume it would take. You're better off finding the vibration frequncy that puts people to sleep & setting up a huge amplifier system...or something.

Yeah, but finding root causes is much harder. Many times both sides point to actions of the other to justify their own actions, ad infinitum.

I say we put everyone in slime filled bathtubs and hook them into a giant VR where they always get what they want.

Thank you. I'm having a hell of a time breaking away from being Serious™ lately.

After I spent 5 years learning not to put the weight of the world on my shoulders, I seem to be experiencing a regression. O:>

Well, there is also the possibility that too high a concentration of gas could kill, not to mention that people driving, working in dangerous situations (High Steel construction, manufacturing facilities, etc).

There is also the question of self determination. No one's judgement is always right, so even with the best of intentions, this could be used to keep a population oppressed as to prevent a radical minority from terrorizing the majority.

Yeah. There's a pun here somewhere about plans being holey vs. holy...

As others have said, "sleeping" gas is not quite as workable as TV/movies would have us believe. AFAIK, there is no substance that will just put someone into a regular sleep, with higher dosage having no effect. Overdosing on tranquilizers is a Bad Thing™, and it's virtually certain that *someone* will be overdosed...

I strongly object to the invasion of privacy and the loss of freedom.

I'd never be able to sleep again. I'd rather risk death than have my home raped like that.

No bloody thank you. The annihilation of individual rights for the sake of 'the good of the people' sounds like complete and utter bullshit to me. Who is to decide what is right for all? You? The government?

To contend that one in such power would never abuse such power, or expand upon it's scope, or would return that power back to the people 'when the threat is over' is absolutely ludicrious and goes against quite a few large examples throughout history.

I have to say, I'm pretty much outright appalled at the idea. Even in some sort of mystical fantasy land where those in power wouldn't abuse their power and would stay completely 'pure' in their actions, I'd still disagree with this idea, due to it's implicit restriction on individual rights and personal property.

I like having a nice set of knives. They're big, shiny, look terrifying, could kill someone, etc. They stay in my home and in perfectly legal use. Because Joe Bob down the street feels 'ill at ease' because I like knives, that's a reason to gas my ass, rape my personal private property, and steal my belongings? I don't bloody think so.
