Observation: "lots" has become an adverb.

Right - it's a noun there. But there is an adverb "lots," and it's been around for a while. That's one of the wonders of hte English language - since it's an uninflected language, words can play multiple roles without changing spelling; for instance, "deep" can be a noun ("the briny deep"), an adjective ("the night is lovely, dark and deep"), or an adverb ("go deep").
