City of Widows
Vrindavan, India has between 15,000 and 20,000 widows living on its streets, because of cultural traditions affecting widows in India.

I can't even fathom this.

To ostracize a woman for something she more than likely did not have control over makes no fucking sense.

There is much about India I do admire, but then there are little bits n' pieces like this that comes through that explains why my officemate has pretty much written off her home country.

Oh, God. I linked to a piece on this on CNN and it made me want to cry. How can families just cast out one of their own in this way - largely due to the widow being seen as a financial burden???

I suppose it's better than the older tradition of suttee - self-immolation of widows on their husbands' funeral pyres.
