Tao of the Day
If you could make the people always afraid of death, and they still persisted in breaking the law, then you might with reason arrest and execute them, and who would dare to break the law? Is not the great executor always there to kill? To do the killing for the great executor is to chop wood for a master carpenter, and you would be lucky indeed if you did not hurt your own hand!
- Lao Tzu (74, Wu)

Why do the people think so little of death? Because the rulers demand too much of life. Therefore the people take death lightly. Having little to live on, one knows better than to value life too much.
- Lao Tzu (75, Feng / English)

Respond to fear when it is appropriate and immediately relevant, but otherwise?
Don't be obliged by it.

An ongoing fear of death gives oppressors an easy handle with which to control you
Until finally
Death is a welcome friend

Begin there, and your life remains your own.

A friend of Aaron's was a game developer. He took some code and/or other IP to work on it at home, and ended up getting charged and convicted for corporate espionage (although he never had any intention of selling or distributing the material to anyone). He went to jail for a time and is now out.

The experience has had a profound effect on him. He no longer fears imprisonment or punishment because he's already been there, done that. He's now a programmer of mods to fast cars (he's worked on our model of WRX, actually). When he got caught by a cop for speeding on some deserted highway, instead of pulling over, he just floored it and sped away, figuring that the worst thing that could happen is that he'd go back to jail. He got away.

I couldn't live my life like that, but it's an interesting perspective.

Wow. That's hardcore.

I don't think I could live my life like that either.

The truth of this has been demonstrated to me. When I read the it, the oppressors are implied to be human... but this is not always the case.
