Tao of the Day
The strangest thing about the nightmare street was that none of the millions of things for sale were made there. They were only sold there. Where were the workshops, the factories, where were the farmers, the craftsmen [...]? Out of sight, somewhere else. Behind walls.
- The Dispossessed, Ursula K. LeGuin (1974)

What was the last thing you bought directly from a craftsman or farmer?

I think it was a gift for Aimee at the Portland Art Show from a Louisiana-based craftsman two weekends ago.

most of the stuff in my CSA box was made at the farm i buy the box from. the bread i'm eating this week was bought from the bakery it was made at. i haven't bought much before that since being in a no-commerce zone. before that, it was probably cherries at a roadside stand and then some handmade wood plates.

CSA = Community-Supported Agriculture? If so, which farm do you buy from?

You rock. I'm always saying it's up to us childless people with the extra time and money to boost the local, in-season and organic market so that it can someday be affordable and convenient for families, and here you are doing it with a husband, teenage boy and a toddler. Damn, girl. You are so my hero :)

A piece of artwork purchased at Bumbershoot. I bought it from the guy who made it.

some earrings I bought off etsy from a friend on LJ. Aside from that, it's pretty dysmal. I should use the farmer's market more than I do. I try to use the local community merc which is often one step removed from the producer. But hey, I stopped shopping at Wal-Mart so I am making progress ;)

Cool dragon and griffin puzzle carvings from an artist at WorldCon.

Questions to her at the time: Do you have a catalog? No.
Do you have a website? Not really. But if you email me, I can send you pictures.

The interwebs have made me so freaking lazy and in need of instant gratification.
