2nd Tao of the Day

I didn't realize until last night when I was emailing someone about meeting new people how much this philosophy of Pribyl's influenced me. Between him and my dad, there influence has at last manifested in recent years. Jake (nplusm) recently observed that now, when I meet new people, they are more equals until they prove otherwise. In the beginning, nobody has anything to prove.

It's a kinder, more open-hearted way to be, and it allows people the momentum of their own awesomeness without having to drop down to velocity 0 to build up the proof of their wonderfulness and re-accelerate. A huge milestone in my life.

Thank you, Pribyl. And thank you, Poppa-san, who by example taught me to always speak to people at their comfort level, and to engage with them as equals regardless of station, religion, race, sex, ability, sexuality, etc.

As LeGuin says, "Judgment is poverty." My life gets a little bit richer with this milestone.

As another friend who might not want to be quoted pointed out to me last year, you give people enough rope and see if they hang themselves. People will prove or disprove themselves with a little space, regardless of whether or not you demand it.
