Safe Environments
One of the things I love about ESL work is providing a safe environment to try and be wrong and learn, where there is no judgment.

Today, as we finished up, Ms. LiZhen said, "Happy Birthday!"

I smiled, and Yuki and I said simultaneously, "Happy New Year!"

And it's not just about ESL. Once, I practiced fighting off an attacker in a room full of women and a woman play-attacking me. Safe spaces are a beautiful thing.

These spaces make us braver, more ready to take a risk.

I wonder what kind of safe spaces we're missing, culturally, that would make us braver, with our words or our art or our bodies or our actions...

safe spaces
Safe, really safe, spaces sometimes just fall into place. More often, they take a lot of work to create. I teach self-defense classes, and making the space safe so that women who were total strangers the first day feel comfortable sharing their scariest moments takes planning. But it is so totally worth it!
