Tao of the Day
Put forth your effort with no thought of gain.

Hold no expectations.

If one strives for power and gifts, no true results will come, and one will become lost in lust.

- Deng Ming-Dao, 365 Tao: Daily Meditations

Yes! I'm always going on about expectation, hope, and idealism, and how they are not safe to rely upon / invest in, but I never quite have the right words to express myself. I think this entry finally unlocks it for me...

Expectation. Hope. Idealism. All of them deny What Is. All of them covet What Might Be.

Should we act in ways that might manifest the changes we want to see? Absolutely. Should we bank on our actions changing the world, other people, etc.? Nope. It's a trap that leads to disappointment, disillusionment, delusion.

We make the effort, and we'll be calmer and saner whenever we can recognize that it is only the effort that is within our control. The results are often beyond our control. Do, then wait and see. Yeah.

There were no blessings contained within Pandora's box.

Do, then wait and see, but as you stop doing, start doing (or planning) something else. The waiting and seeing creates expectations and should be done in the background.

For me, wanting something too much always brings about a paralyzing fear of doing somethig wrong, and then the correct course of action becomes unavailable.

Also, one should learn to enjoy the striving, not the (expectation of) results striven after.

I'm totally down with your first point. I hadn't made the connection. Well said.

I'm thinking about the joy of striving thing. Not sure I agree with that one. Thinking about it.

Thanks for posting this Tao -
It is definitely something that I needed to be reminded of.

Something that has become a bit of a mantra for me lately...

"Be hopefull, but not expectant!"

Hope to me is simply a wish for a positive outcome. Expectancy is a demand that the universe return a positive outcome. The universe has it's own plans for us and will quite often slap us down so that we can better appreciate when it lifts us up.
